Dental implants are a remarkable solution in restorative dentistry. Patients choose them because they not only look and feel like natural teeth, but they can be cared for in much the same way too. However, dental implants are still not the same as real teeth. Dental implants are more resistant to staining, plaque accumulation and decay, but the gums around the implant need extra care to stay healthy. If the tissues that support your implant deteriorate or weaken, you could be at risk for implant failure.
Just like natural teeth, it is important to prevent issues with plaque, food particles, and potential bacterial infection, as these can all affect the health of your dental implants. Therefore, dental hygiene with implants is extremely important. Both brushing and flossing are non-negotiable components of your oral hygiene routine.
Flossing with Dental Implants
Flossing is important if you have dental implants because it is the best and only way to remove harmful build-up around the implant and replacement tooth. Regular dental floss can work just fine, but many dentists will suggest a special dental floss for your dental implants. This super floss has a unique soft, spongy section to more effectively grab food particles and plaque around the implant.
You can use the same technique to floss your dental implants as you do your natural teeth. Simply saw the floss back and forth between the implant and adjacent tooth or implant. Use a motion that works the floss back around and out of the space and repeat the process on the other side of the implant. Floss at least once a day, but after every meal is ideal.
Remember that flossing works to clean areas of your mouth that your toothbrush cannot reach. While it is a powerful weapon against gum disease and decay, it also works to prevent bad breath. If you aren’t flossing like you should, it is time to implement this simple, three-minute task into your daily habits. Your restorative dentistry investment depends on it.
