Tooth loss is an embarrassing and debilitating problem facing many Americans today.  The best way to deal with tooth loss is to prevent it from happening in the first place.  You can decrease your chances of tooth loss by flossing and brushing daily and by getting your teeth professionally cleaned and checked by a dentist regularly (at least every six months).

One of the leading causes of tooth loss today is periodontal (gum) disease.  Gum disease is caused when the bacteria in plaque causes the gums to become inflamed.  It starts with Gingivitis, the mildest form of gum disease in which the gums swell and bleed easily.  You can reverse Gingivitis by getting a professional tooth cleaning and practicing good oral hygiene at home.

Untreated Gingivitis can lead to Periodontitis, an infection in the gums surrounding the teeth.  This sets off an inflammatory response that can result in the tooth loss.  The warning signs of periodontal (gum) disease include the following:

  • Bad breath
  • Persistent sore, swollen, red or bleeding gums
  • Tooth pain and sensitivity

If you are currently experiencing any of the above warning signs or if you suspect you may have periodontal disease, please schedule an appointment with a dentist as soon as possible.  Dental implants provide a permanent solution for missing teeth that enable patients to chew, eat, laugh and talk with confidence.  If you are currently missing teeth due to gum disease or any other reason, schedule an appointment with an Oral Surgeon to see if you are a candidate for this revolutionary tooth replacement system.
